Schools in Milton Keynes are continuing to show 'rapid improvement' as thousands of students are celebrating passing their GCSE exams.

The number of students achieving at least five GCSE or equivalent at A* to C has rapidly improved at nearly 70 per cent - up from just over 52 per cent in 2007.

While in the core subjects of Maths and English - so highly valued by potential employers and in helping to secure a university place - there has also been significant improvement..

In this area students achieving five GCSEs at grades A* to C, including Maths and English, rose from 39.6 per cent in 2007 to 48 per cent this year.

The improvement is being put down to the strong focus on these core areas by schools.

Liberal Democrat Councillor Sam Potts said: "These results are due to the hard work put in by the students and teachers. The results from our local school, Ousedale, are also excellent showing further success, with 61% achieving 5 or more GCSE or equivalent at grades A* to C including English and Maths, up from 56% last year."
