Lib Dems Fight on their Record12.01.00am BST (GMT +0100) Sun 8th Apr 2007
Sam Potts and the Liberal Democrat candidates across Milton Keynes will be fighting on their record of delivering service improvements whilst keeping council tax levels down. Government inspections and independent public opinion polling both show that Milton Keynes has improved under the Liberal Democrats over the last five years. Our Council tax levels are £60 below the English average. If you lived in any of the neighbouring Conservative run areas your council tax would be much higher than in Milton Keynes. People in Leighton Buzzard pay over £5 a week more on average. Locally, MK Conservative cllrs. put in a last minute bid to increase council tax by almost 5%. The Lib Dem council tax increase was 3.6%. We are proud of our record of achievements which include: • Local people say Milton Keynes is cleaner (according to the recent Residents' Survey) • Council tax is well below the national average • Education standards have improved (11 year olds outshone pupils from other areas with their best ever test results) • Residents feel safer (according to a recent Police Survey - the Lib Dem Council invests nearly £2 million on delivering a safer MK including more community safety wardens & taking tough action on anti social behaviour) • Older people are being helped to keep their independence • Recycling and garden waste schemes are popular with residents (recycling rates, including composting, have increased to 36%) In addition, we have been fighting for local residents. We have won the campaign to save the V10 as a grid road, continued to fight for fair funding for services and won an extra £2 million from the government, fought hard to try and stop London's waste being dumped in MK and fought to save our villages & green spaces by fighting against the Buckinghamshire Tory campaign to put houses east of the M1 in Sherington Ward. Milton Keynes Liberal Democrats will again be putting up candidates to fight in every seat up for election this year. Two former Mayors, Pat Seymour and Alan Pugh are standing down and will be sorely missed. Pat Seymour is standing down to spend more time with her 4 grandchildren who live abroad. Pat has been councillor for Sherington since 1993, for Bucks CC as well as MKBC and latterly MKC. She was Mayor in 2001/02 and a former Cabinet member. Like Pat, Alan Pugh has been a long standing councillor and has represented Linford for over 20 years, and has now decided to retire. He was Mayor in 2002/03. For more details on the Milton Keynes Council Election see: www.mklibdems.co.uk Pat Seymour is urging local residents to vote for Sam Potts to keep up the fight for the villages. The Bucks Conservatives want to build all over our villages. Labour always come last in Sherington Ward - Sam Potts will be a strong voice fighting for our villages.
