GCSE SYSTEM NEEDS WHOLESALE REFORM

Commenting on Lord Adonis' announcement that the Government are considering the International GCSE for use in state schools, Liberal Democrat Sam Potts said:

"Schools are becoming dissatisfied by what current GCSE courses have to offer. This is a belated and half-hearted admission from the Government that they have failed to provide a curriculum suitable for young people today.

"Rather than tinkering around the edges, Ministers should have the courage to introduce the wholesale reform that is needed.

"The Tomlinson report provided the basis for a challenging mix of academic and vocational education fit for the twenty first century, yet was rejected out of hand by this Government."
