RADICAL PROPOSALS ON ELECTORAL COMMISSION WELCOME

12.00.00am UTC (GMT +0000) Thu 18th Jan 2007

Commenting on the publication of the Committee on Standards in Public Life, Liberal Democrat Sam Potts said:

"British politics needs the maximum participation of the public as well as fair but tough systems to make sure that all those involved follow the rules.

"This welcome report is robust and radical. Today's recommendations would help to increase confidence in the electoral process.

"These are good proposals to make the Electoral Commission more focused and more clearly accountable without it losing its independence.

"Parliament must also be prepared to listen more to the Electoral Commission. The Commission was very strong in it's advice on protecting against the potential for postal vote fraud. The House of Lords voted to accept the Commission's advice, but Labour MPs did not."
