PLANS TO STAMP OUT POSTAL VOTE FRAUD COULD COME TOO LATE- POTTS

12.00.00am UTC (GMT +0000) Tue 12th Apr 2005

Sam Potts, Liberal Democrat, responding to reports in The Times that the Government is to legislate to stop postal vote fraud after the election, said:

"The Government may be locking the stable door after the horse has bolted. Recent court cases show that postal voting is more open to widespread abuse than voting at polling stations.

"It was disgraceful that Labour Party lawyers tried to sweep problems with the postal vote system under the carpet by trying to postpone the Birmingham postal fraud case until after May 5th.

"Labour should have shown more commitment to the integrity of the democratic process by acting to prevent fraud before the General Election."
