FREE PERSONAL CARE FOR THE ELDERLY IS NEEDED

12.00.00am UTC (GMT +0000) Sun 10th Apr 2005

Commenting on the Health Select Committee report into Care for the Elderly, Liberal Democrat Sam Potts said:

"Its not good enough for Ministers to give nods and winks suggesting that they are going to fix this chaotic situation having spent the last eight years denying there was a problem. What is needed now are clear national eligibility criteria for NHS continuing care.

"Under this Government, the frail and sick elderly suffer discrimination, are treated as second class citizens, and are often forced to pay for basic care such as help with feeding, dressing and washing. Liberal Democrats would scrap these unfair charges and introduce free personal care, as we have already done in Scotland".
